Living with Chronic Illness

“I feel like I am dragging my nerves on sandy gravel every time I move.” If you can understand that statement you too might suffer from Fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2010, but started symptoms in 2001. I believe my symptoms truly began with a traumatic car accident I had 1998.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and memory problems, as well as many others. Symptoms sometimes begin after trauma, surgery, an infection or significant stress. Women are more likely to develop Fibromyalgia than men. Many people with fibromyalgia also have headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anxiety and depression. There is no cure for Fibromyalgia, but there are treatments of medication, and sometimes exercise, diet, and lifestyle changes may help.

I have days where I find it hard to stand at the sink to do dishes, to self care like standing in the shower for long, or even to do things like going to the grocery store. Everything is painful and exhausting. I am Bipolar so I am already prone to bouts of depression. So feeling I cannot do the things my family needs me to do because my body is rebelling is hard to handle.

I am currently on medication to help with pain management. I try to keep up with yoga. Yoga is pretty easy on my body. You don’t have to push your body too hard. You do what your body can handle. Right now that may not be too much. Other days that is more. It all depends on the day and my body.

SEROTONIN: GIVE IT A BOOST, NATURALLY

SerotoninSerotonin is a compound found in blood platelets and serum that constricts the blood vessels and acts as a neurotransmitter carrying signals along and between the nerves. Serotonin is made in the brain and the intestines. The majority of the body’s serotonin can be found in the gastrointestinal tract. It is thought to be active in constricting smooth muscles, regulating cyclic body processes, and contributing to well being and happiness.

It is thought that it can affect mood, social behavior, appetite/digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire/function. Drugs that alter serotonin levels have important clinical uses such as in the treatment of depression, nausea, Fibromyalgia, migraines, and more. An association has been made between depression and Serotonin. Scientists remain unsure whether decreased levels of Serotonin contribute to depression or depression causes a decrease in serotonin levels.

Also medical research continues to evaluate the role of serotonin in obesity and Parkinson’s disease. Studies have shown that a persistent high level of serotonin in the bones can lead to an increase in osteoporosis.

Fibromyalgia and Serotonin — Fibromyalgia disrupts important systems and is one of the most widespread pain disorders out there. Since the effects of Serotonin are systemic, it’s no surprise more experts are pointing to a relationship between Fibromyalgia and Serotonin.

Probiotics The majority of Serotonin is made in the gut. Probiotics help balance out the gut function and plays apart in nutrient absorption.
Vitamin B Complex & Tryptophan  Vitamin B3 and B6 is necessary for the body to make Tryptophan, which is necessary to make Serotonin. When Tryptophan is taken with other protein sources it may not be absorbed as well. So a supplement version should be taken separately from other proteins.
Sunlight  Spending time in the sunlight actually raises Serotonin levels. It is important to have some of that time without interference of sunblock.
Exercise  Any form of exercise will do but cardio seems to work the best in raising Serotonin levels.
Massage  Massage has been shown to raise Serotonin levels. It is unsure if it is the massage itself or the human contact that raises such levels.

My First Blog Post

This is my first Blog post and  I wanted to tell you a little about myself.  I’m a mom to two handsome boys, a wife to an amazing fisheries conservation scientist, and a mom to many african fat tail geckos.

I am a huge fan of yoga and acupuncture. If it wasn’t for crispy bacon and an occasional juicy steak I could totally be a vegetarian. I prefer soy over regular milk due to tummy troubles. Dark chocolate over milk. The darker the better. Avocados,  bananas, berries of any type,  a huge salad with a cilantro vinaigrette, and sushi are just a few of my favorite foods.

I love to color (gel pens and adult coloring books are the best). Art Therapy is a great way to stay sane. I find it really helps with my anxiety. I also love to read. I am a huge fan of the Twilight Saga, Harey Potter Series, Hunger Games, Divergent, and 13 Reasons Why.

Aside from anxiety I also have bipolar depression, PTSD (I am not a veteran. I have never been to war.), fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, asthma, migraines, cold uticaria, non-diabetic neuropathy, and previously suffered from an eating disorder. I have spent time hospitalized  for my mental health stability, or lack there of.

That is what is like to blog about. Being a mom and a wife while dealing with the health issues I face. I look forward to posting in the future.
